Your wedding jewellery adds that final touch to your bridal outfit. Romin Shah tells you how to go about your trousseau jewels selection
To attain that glam goddess look and depending on the availability of time, you need to shop for your trousseau jewels in advance after selecting your outfit.
PLAN IN ADVANCE Most jewellery designers and those from the wedding industry recommend that you plan your jewellery selection in advance, allotting sufficient time for trials/rejections and for customising your personal choice. "Ideally purchases should be made between 30-45 days before the wedding. A wedding has a combination of functions associated with it. The bride matches the jewellery with her outfits to suit the various occasions," says Vijay Jain, CEO, ORRA.
Bridal jewellery can be shopped only after the outfit is finalised. Jewellery shopping needs a lot of thought so it is better to start as soon as the out is chosen. Ideally, a bride should start shopping for jewellery at least three months in advance. It gives her time to look around and select the jewellery and pick up pieces that she likes rather than pick up in haste and not be happy with them. Also if she has some design in mind she can get it custommade as it may not be available over the counter, and it should be ready before selecting her outfits and the same can be matched and put together. Jewellery should always be sorted out before the outfits.
ASSISTANCE TO YOUR RESCUE You should select jewellery depending on their face structure. If you get confused, it's always good to seek advice from your jewellery designer. They will suggest and give you the best jewellery which suits you and your outfit the best. It is best if the bride herself shops for her own outfit. But if it gets too cumbersome and difficult to make an informed choice, she should go in for professional help and consult a jewellery designer. Another option could be taking along with you a family member or a friend who would be aware of your taste and what would suit you best.
Always keep your preference in mind, as the final choice would be yours. It's always seen that a lot of brides get carried away by the people who accompany them. If in doubt, look at the longevity of the piece, as to how it can be worn over a period of time. In case of confusion, talk to your jeweller who will guide you carefully over your purchase.
“Most branded jewellers
have well trained staff that will be able to guide the bride on the purchase to be made, from selecting the right size of diamonds, to the design matching her outfits; they will be able to assist her,” says Jain.
OPTIONS AND BEYOND While
selecting your choicest jewels, try and experiment with various styles
and pieces. Try not to restrict yourself to a particular trend/ style.
Besides teeming your jewellery with different outfits, you also need to
pay attention to the fact that you would be eventually using your
bridal jewels even after marriage. "While the bride may prefer buying
contemporary designs, it’d ideal to invest in at least one traditional
piece which reflects the brides culture,” advises Jain. One should try
to have all kinds of jewellery in the trousseau - traditional jadau,
classic diamond, rose cut and gold, and even contemporary fun pieces.
This way the bride can have something to wear along with all of her
outfits. Not only should you make all the jewellery heavy and chunky but
a mixed selection of heavy medium and also daily wear pieces. Mix and
match is a concept that always works and helps having a variety of
styles is your collection.

After having decided your bridal outfit or simply the necklines and colour palette of your attire, number of functions and venues, then you can start shopping for jewellery
Most of the necklaces need to be co-ordinated with the necklines of the clothes so that they don’t clash or overlap.
The colours of the garments and the jewellery have to be complimentary to each othersometimes contrasting and sometimes co-ordinated.
Number of functions helps deciding how many jewellery pieces are required.
Venues are important as nowadays most weddings are location weddings—if the wedding has casual beach— Goa mood then very heavy jewellery will not be appropriate.
